Gemma’s story: from NHS nurse to hospice specialist

Before joining Queenscourt Hospice, Gemma Stead had never stepped inside a hospice. After beginning her career in acute care, ITU and later District Nursing, working alongside a hospice Community Specialist transformed her understanding of palliative care and inspired her move into hospice nursing.

As she progressed into a Developmental Band 6 role at Queenscourt Hospice, Gemma needed specialist palliative care training but was concerned about the cost of a Master’s programme. Support from the Wolfson Professional Development Grant made this possible.

“The Wolfson Foundation funding was exactly what I needed,” says Gemma. “Without the grant, I might not be where I am now on my professional development journey.”

The funding supported Gemma’s MSc modules, helping strengthen her knowledge, communication and clinical practice, with positive benefits for both her career and patient care.

Reflecting on the experience, Gemma encourages others to apply: “If you meet the criteria and have a goal this funding can help you achieve – just go for it.”
