Life is for learning! (TBEC)

The Terence Burgess Education Centre is named after the Terence Burgess, formerly surgeon to Southport & Ormskirk District General Hospital & first Chairman of the Queenscourt board of Trustees.

As recently as a few years ago Palliative Care did not exist as a medical specialty yet its application, properly administered, has such a beneficial effect on a patient’s quality of life. The Terence Burgess Education Centre (TBEC) was built to spread the word and share the knowledge with everyone who has responsibility for patients, be they carer or professional.

We opened in 2001, and now offer a wide range of interactive courses to enable those in caring roles to be informed and confident as they confront difficult situations and put theory into practice.

The education team aims and objectives are:

  • To provide a varied, interactive and exciting palliative care education programme
  • To enable those attending to increase their palliative care knowledge and skills to the benefit of all patients with advanced disease and families in their care
  • To facilitate learning by providing a high standard of teaching by all members of the multi-professional specialist palliative care services.
  • To Enable those attending to translate theory into practice in their work.

The Terence Burgess Education Centre also provides an extensive professional development programme for Queenscourt staff and volunteers and placements for medical and undergraduate students.

Those with physical needs are catered for, including disabled toilet facilities, a passenger lift and a hearing loop. We are pleased to offer a specialist palliative care library, a reference only facility, that anyone in the area is welcome to use. The library contains a variety of books, journals and videos relating to palliative care. Internet facilities are also available for use. If you would like to use the library please contact the education co-ordinator to arrange an induction visit.

The Centre is staffed by:
